4.0 out of 5 stars Great product

This is a great product and held up well. It does have an odd shape plug which was awkward. It is quick to save items to. Easy to carry with you if you need to. Small enough to fit in your pocket! I did have to replace the cable, but it was 5 years of routine use later.

5.0 out of 5 stars Warning: Hard Drive can't be used as an Internal Drive
Reviewed in the United States on 27 March 2012

I'm not commenting about the drive's speed or reliability, I have used Toshiba for a while and I'm confident in the quality of the components. I didn't buy the drive to replace an internal hard drive, but I was still curious about the setup of this drive so I opened it to check it out. It happens the controller in this drive has the USB connectors directly soldered on the controller board, and no SATA interface connection whatsoever, meaning there is no independent SATA/USB conversion board (the typical arrangement in this kind of external drives). I particularly think this is a very optimal arrangement as the disk needs much less energy to operate (less than 1 Watt) and is incredibly light. I must also mention the drive is virtually silent, even during active operation. The drive is still 9.5mm tall so it is also pretty thin. On the other hand, if the drive fails (and you have some unused old hard drive), you won't be able to reuse the enclosure, which at the end of the day is not such a big deal since it's a better idea to get a replacement using the 3 year warranty. In 3 years time this might be a consideration, but I don't expect this to be useful after that. Who knows what we'll be using then.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works with Mid-2012 MacBook Air
Reviewed in the United States on 1 August 2012

Despite what some other reviews said, this hard drive worked perfectly with my Mid-2012 Macbook Air running OS X 10.8 (the first generation with USB 3.0). I was skeptical to open the package at first, because I read through a couple of reviews after ordering that said it was incompatible with the newest Apple laptops unless plugged into a powered USB hub or using an old Micro-USB 2.0 cable. I plugged this in using the included cable and my computer immediately asked if I wanted to use it for Time Machine, which I did, and it works so far without a hitch.

Overall the hard drive so far feels well built and is very small.

I'll update this review if any connection issues arise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Auto Detect, Fast Transfer, Works Great!
Reviewed in the United States on 19 May 2012

I have a Windows 7 Professional, 64-Bit OS, desktop that I built in 2011. I removed the Toshiba Canvio 750GB USB 3.0 Portable HD out of the box, and plugged it into the back USB 2.0 port (using the cable they sent). My desktop detected it immediately. The HD came with some setup software, but I ignored it. I did not have to reformat the drive or do anything to it, other than plug it in and transfer files. I transferred large folders, videos, software, and images. It was quick and easy. Having a short cable helps expedite the transfer speed (shorter transfer distance). No hick-ups, no problems at all. Elegant looking drive. Feels like a quality and solid built.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but mysterious.

The product is very good quality and seems to work fine, except that there is no expanatin for anything. There is a lot of written info about WHAT it will do for you, but there is zero info on HOW to do it. Not everyone is a pro with this kind of devices and it woud be nice to have some sort of expalation about WHAT, WHY, WHRE and so on. VERY DISSAPOINTED, BECAUSE I GOT NO WORD FROM THE MAKER ABOUT HOW TO UTILIZE THIS DEVICE TO ITS FULL CAPACITY.
