1.0 out of 5 stars unreliable fast external drive, lost all my data twice

Super good / fast external drive. I got one that was a dud but the supplier replaced it immediately and the new one's been working like a charm for many months now.

After a year of use it spontaneously lost everything and said I could not use the drive without reformatting it. Total bummer. I now consider this drive to be completely unreliable.

Excellent external drive for my MacBook! Super fast transfers of videos and acts as if it's a internal drive with zero lag playing back. I reccomended partitioning the drive as it will give you additional back up if something goes wrong.

The drive itself is rather large but very Mac like inspired design and fits well with my other equipment. This is not really a drive I would consider traveling with and is more suited to be a stationary drive for editing or mass storage.

I have several G-Technology external drives - this one is my TimeMachine disk attached to one of my Macs, and it works well in that role. In my case, I'm using the USB 3 interface and getting pretty close to the claimed 165MB/sec throughput...seems to be the fastest of the interfaces I have to choose from (but in fairness, the Mac it's connected to doesn't have an external eSATA connector, so my choices are pretty much USB or FireWire).

It's not clear from the photo, but this is a large and substantial drive. Much bigger than the G-DRIVE Mini I also use (and to be clear, much faster as well). It runs cool and seems well protected from vibration and so forth - important for the type of drive you want to leave running continuously. Only real complaint is that I find it much louder than similar drives from other vendors, and even other G-Technology drives. When TimeMachine fires up a backup every hour or so, it's like a small jet engine spooling up under my desk.

Otherwise, G-Technology makes amazing products and I'm sure it'll last a good long time...definitely should be on your short list if you're looking for a topnotch external drive.

5.0 out of 5 stars G-Tech G-Drive - Media Drive at its best.

This media drive is really all you need for your editing or media storage. This comes with the high data transfer ports, looks great, is stack able and you can daisy chain a number of them together for a raid. The case is very high quality with a heat sink on the bottom but I have not had any problems with overheating. Overall a great product. If you are a professional editor and need an inexpensive high quality expandable drive system, this is a good start.

1.0 out of 5 stars Does Not Work With Firewire 800 and Time Machine

I've had nothing, but frustration since I received this G-Tech drive several weeks ago to use with my IMac. It worked for about a day and then started reporting an error message and failure to back-up. Spent an extensive amount of time researching the issue. Used the Disk Utility to verify and repair the G-Tech drive and my hard drive, but no change. Followed some online advice to do a complete reset of Time Machine by deleting the com.apple.TimeMachine.plist file and that worked for a day or two and then the error was back. Time Machine will only back up to the G-Tech external hard drive if the computer is restarted and who wants to have to remember to do that every day. Read some other reviews of other G-Tech drives that recommend using the USB 3.0 connection instead of the FireWire. Planning to try that next to see if it will solve the problem, but unless you want headaches, I'd buy another product if you're planning to use this with a Mac and Time Machine.
